Professional Certification
The MTNA Professional Certification program exists to improve the level of professionalism within the field of applied music teaching through professional certification. For teachers, professional certification provides validation of their teaching excellence and demonstrates their commitment to continued professional growth. For the public, certification helps identify competent music teachers in their communities.
The program is based upon a set of five standards defining what a competent music teacher should know and be able to do. Upon fulfillment of these standards, applicants are granted the MTNA Professional Certification credential with the designation, Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM). All music teachers actively engaged in the profession are eligible for MTNA Professional Certification.
Professional Standards
Standard 1: Professional Preparation
The certified music teacher demonstrates professional preparation in music history, music theory, and performance.
Standard 2: Professional Teaching Practice
The certified music teacher demonstrates professional teaching practices in areas including, but not limited to, ethics, studio policies, and business management.
Standard 3: Professional Development
The certified music teacher participates in ongoing professional development through membership in professional associations, attendance at workshops, and other educational activities.
Standard 4: Pedagogy
The certified music teacher demonstrates pedagogical knowledge and skills appropriate for teaching music effectively.
Standard 5: Program Development
The certified music teacher demonstrates the ability to develop and evaluate comprehensive program plans.
